After opening its doors to guests on 21 June 2021, Disney’s Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel was officially inaugurated on 26 and 27 June at Disneyland Paris during a weekend dedicated to the press and guests. The establishment, which has been closed since 6 January 2019, is coming back to life with the superheroes of the Marvel universe. A look back at the Disney’s Hotel New York Experience Weekend – The Art of Marvel.
After a quick trip to the reception for the traditional check-in, the morning starts with a guided tour. Only a handful of Cast Members called “Art Gardien” can tell the history of the hotel in these tours. They are recognisable by the badge worn on their costume. Far from being exclusive to the weekend, the Art Guardien Tour is available to all visitors staying at the hotel. We are currently considering the possibility of reserving time slots at the concierge desk. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our host, Allan, for the great time spent in his company.
During the weekend, young and young at heart are invited to participate in a series of missions. Each event will lead to the awarding of badges bearing the effigy of one of the Avengers. On the programme: questions about superheroes or deciphering a coded message in “Morse code”. Not forgetting a sporting event worthy of a Captain America training session and many other things. Given the success of this activity, we can only advise Disneyland Paris to make this type of activity permanent, at least for children! A fun way to discover the secrets of the hotel.
For lunch, we head for The Steakhouse Disney Village. The beginning of the afternoon is the opportunity to wander freely in the hotel and especially to discover our room. Like all the InsidEars invited that day, it is in one of the Superior Rooms that we take our seats.
The day continues with a round table discussion led by Sylvie Massara – Artistic Director for Disneyland Paris hotels and Caroline May – Creative Director for Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI). This exchange is an opportunity to look back at the historic transformation of the establishment. Disconnected from the Avengers Campus, the hotel is designed as a celebration of the Marvel universe. Artists from all over the world have participated in the creation of the works. Like a living museum, the works will evolve with the future films and series of the franchise. One of the greatest challenges of this rehabilitation was to succeed in moving from the films we all know to reality, while maintaining a certain coherence between the different spaces. Mission accomplished!
In the early evening, it is none other than Spider-Man that we meet in the Super Hero Station. Right next door, the different scenes of the Marvel Photo Stations appear as a real asset in the overall experience offered by the hotel. Doctor Strange, Thor, Iron-Man or Guardians of the Galaxy to name but a few, there is something for everyone! The only downside is the absence of Captain America’s famous shield, whose presence would provide another successful photo opportunity.
Dinner is served in one of the Ballroom, including a selection from the hotel’s two restaurants: Downtown Restaurant & Manhattan Restaurant.
Starters: Mozzarella Tomatoes, Salmon Bagels | Shuttle Crabs, Pastrami Coleslaw.
Main course: “Saltibocca” from Farm chicken with parma ham, sage and potato rotis | Fillet of sea bream, tomatoes and olives Eggplant parmigiana.
Desserts: Amarena cherry tarts, and creamy pistachios | Carrot Cake and Macaroon “Marvel” | Thor’s Hammer.
We then headed outside to Rockefeller Plaza. As the night begins to fall, the atmosphere is in full swing. The French group Lilly Wood & The Prick took to the stage and performed a number of songs including Prayer In C and the Frank Sinatra cover, New York, New York.
The evening then continues with DJ Breakbot and Irfane whose interpretation of Come and Get Your Love (Redbone) takes us straight back to Guardians of the Galaxy.
A few moments later, all eyes are on the roof of the hotel. Spider-Man makes a remarkable entrance. Taking the opportunity to test the new gadgets added to his costume by Tony Stark, he then begins his descent from the top of the building offering him an exceptional view of Sleeping Beauty Castle. After a few acrobatics, reminding us of the use of the #spider-man, the spider-man returns to terra firma to conclude his heroic performance under the applause. However, we would have appreciated the presence of the other Avengers, who were represented at the time of the closing in January 2019.
After this highlight, the evening resumes its course and continues with the presence of another DJ. As night falls, we discover the hotel as we have never seen it before, in a particularly bright and colourful setting. The next morning, the weekend experience ends with breakfast.
We couldn’t end this article without the faces of some of the everyday superheroes we met during this Experience Weekend at Disney’s Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel. We would like to thank Disneyland Paris for this invitation and all the Cast Members who contributed to the success of this event.
