Jack Sparroww, a himsical character!
Jack Sparrow was only supposed to be a supporting character to William Turner, who was to be the hero. However, due to Johnny Depp’s great performance, Jack Sparrow was given the lead role in the story.
The character of Jack Sparrow is inspired in part by the Looney Tunes character Pepe the Polecat for his sloppy hygiene and uncontrolled attraction to women.
Jack Sparrow is recognisable by his outfit, which evolves throughout the different sequels: it is more or less in dark brown tones, even grey and black. Jack has a long-sleeved white shirt (which is no longer really white as his adventures wear on), a large belt and a light-coloured cloth striped with red around his waist in which he slips his weapons and to which he attaches his compass. He has trousers, boots and a long coat. He wears a red bandana on his head and his famous tricorn. Jack has long dreadlocks and some grigris hanging from his hair. He wears a goatee ending in a double braid and large rings on his fingers. Jack has a small red cross marked on his right cheekbone (not present in the first films), kohl-blackened eyes and tattoos on his body including a sparrow, representing his name: Sparrow. He has even been branded by the East India Company on his right arm with a ‘P’ to indicate that he is a pirate.
Jack prefers negotiations to violence and does not hesitate to divert the murderous desires of his enemies with other, sometimes extravagant, temptations. His body language is both expressive and stammering, giving the impression that he is rambling. Is it because of drunkenness or to divert the attention of his enemies? No one knows, only Jack has the secret.
A lover of women and rum, Jack Sparrow covets many treasures, not all of which are made of silver and gold. Here are the most important objects to complete his quests and/or for which he goes on the hunt:
The Compass that does not point North.
The Cursed Treasure of Cortes.
Davy Jones’ Chest.
The Eight Pieces.
Blackbeard’s sword.
The Silver Chalices.
The Trident of Poseidon.
Despite many conquests, Captain Jack Sparrow declares that his only true love is the ocean.
He frequently uses the phrase “You will remember this day as the day you almost captured Captain Jack Sparrow”, sometimes interrupted to add a humorous touch to the films.
His father is Edward Teague, played by Keith Richards (guitarist of The Rolling Stones).
His friends are : Joshamee Gibbs and the crew of the Black Pearl (from the second film), William Turner, Elizabeth Swann and Tia Dalma.
Jack Sparrow is also the hero of a novel written by Ann C. Crispin: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Price of Freedom (2011).
He appears in most of the video games based on the saga (except Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War) where he can be encountered by players. He can also be found in video games: Kingdom Hearts 2 (2005), Disney Infinity (2013) and Sea of Thieves released in 2018.
The success of the films has led to Disney parks’ attractions being updated with characters and elements from the film: in 2006 for Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort, in 2007 for Tokyo Disneyland. At Disneyland Paris, the attraction added Jack Sparrow audio-animatronics and other references to the films at various locations in July 2017.

Disney and me, it's a long love story. I fell into it as a child and never got out. From movies to theme parks, through the history of the Walt Disney Company, to comic books, everything fascinates me.
