After several critical failures, Marvel Studios needed to restore its image. After the takeover of 20th Century Fox, the fate of a likely Deadpool 3 was uncertain. When Marvel Studios finally announced that they would be making a new Deadpool movie following on from the two previous films, the fan community was divided between excitement and fear. So what did we think of Deadpool & Wolverine?
What made the previous two Deadpool films so special and appreciated was the sincerity of the comic book adaptation. Between the vulgar language and the violence, the films were completely out of step with what we were used to seeing. A breath of fresh air for the industry. However, an adaptation by Disney and Marvel Studios could create a certain fear of censorship, even partial, of these characteristic elements. But don’t worry, that’s not the case. On the contrary, Deadpool and all the others are in top form and clearly, dear parents, this film is not suitable for all audiences, especially young ones. What’s more, the film is incredibly self-deprecating, taking potshots at Disney and Marvel Studios time and time again (and we want more!).
Deadpool & Wolverine has one mission: to integrate Deadpool into the MCU. But we know he’s not in the same universe as the Avengers. Even though we’re in the saga of the multiverse, making the link between the two universes isn’t the easiest thing to do. Marvel chose to bring in the TVA already seen in Loki and I think that was the smartest way to do it. There’s a real link between the series universe and the Fox universe (the X-men film universe). The story’s antagonist, despite his impressive powers, won’t go down as one of the most memorable. I think this film is a real tribute to the old Fox films and a very good addition to the MCU. Between the surprises and the cameos, you’re in for a real treat.
AH! And for fans, there’s a post-generic scene.
For me, this film is a real success. It’s everything I expected from this film, if not more. Can’t wait to see his next projects in the rest of the MCU.
