WISH – Our opinion

For its 62nd animated feature film and to mark the 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company, Walt Disney Animation Studios is bringing us Wish. So are you ready to make your wish?

Synopsis

Asha, a quick-witted 17-year-old devoted to her loved ones, lives in Rosas, a kingdom where literally every wish can be granted. In a moment of despair, she makes a wish to the stars that is answered by a cosmic force: a small ball of infinite energy called Star. Together, Star and Asha will face down the most formidable of enemies and prove that the wish of a determined person, combined with the magic of the stars, can produce miracles…

Overall opinion

Wish transported me completely into its universe. A touching story, endearing characters, catchy songs, enough to celebrate 100 years of Disney Cie as it should be. Asha is a character that’s easy to identify with. Her moral integrity towards her family and friends makes us want to follow her and see her succeed in whatever she undertakes. What’s more, the film’s villain is a real villain, and that’s really good. There are many nods to other animated classics throughout the film, more or less discreet, but you can sense a real desire on the part of the studio to celebrate their history.

Animation

For this film, Disney combines the 3D animation we’ve come to expect since Rapunzel with the watercolour effects of the studio’s first feature films, such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. If at first the graininess of the watercolour effect with today’s technology can be a little disturbing, we soon get over it and enjoy the wonderful images the film offers. It’s more a tribute to the roots of animation, and the watercolour style doesn’t add much to the film. The character designs remain the same as in the other 3D animated films, which is a shame. The only character to stand out from the crowd is King Magnifico, whose magic effects work extremely well to bring out the villainy of the character.

Conclusion

Wish, is the perfect film to celebrate 100 years of Disney! Its world and songs will appeal to young and old alike. For me, it’s already one of the Disney classics.
